[QUESTION] How to feed puppy's

Berichtdoor K9Luna » za 10 nov, 2007 14:32

Hello Mogens,

As I was reading the anwers in earlier topic, I wonder how you would feed a pup from 5 months. You say it would get 6 meals a week.
Wich amounts would you feed a day for say a German Sheperd?

I can imagen that a lot of people are very insecure about giving the pups what they need to get big and healty.

And as it is now... next year we are going to get a pup so I am allready reading in :) (my 2 dogs now are fed kibble until summer 2006).

Kind regards,

Tanja

Hi Tanja,

All dogs are different. Even litter mates.

The rule for feeding is this: You feed MAXIMUM 80% of what the dog COULD have eaten, if you let it, over a weekly period. And you keep at least one day per week with absolutely no food. Whatever is left, you feed in meals that are so large, that the dog will leave food behind when you feed.

What that comes to in kilograms, YOU tell me, for your dog! :-) will keep it secret, though - because nobody else will be able to use that information!

I don't blame people for being insecure about this. But the insecurity is easy to deal with! Go to http://k9joy.com/RawFoodForDogs and get the e-book (there is a link there also to the Dutch translation)! There is a ton of information in it about these things.... way more than I can cover here in a few posts...

Although raw feeding is simple, the simplicity only materializes when you have a vast amount of background information. And that background information is all in the book.

You question addresses exactly one of my main concerns and main reasons for writing that book: I do not want to make other people's decisions by taking charge of their feeding! This feeding can ONLY work, when YOU make the decisions, on the basis of solid knowledge and observation of your dog.

It is like driving a car. If someone asks me how far they should drive from the edge of the road, would you then expect a precise answer, in cm? And would you expect that answer to be independent of weather, road conditions, traffic, the car, the driver, etc?

This is the same thing... :-) Remember Einstein!

Cheers,

Mogens

Hello Mogens,

Thnx for your answer. I will certainly read into Raw Food for Dogs.
What your saying about looking at your dog and taking the right decisions is treu and that is just what I am trying to do. I get my info from different sorces and make a disision bassed on that using my own brain :)

But for a pup... 80% of the weekly total, at least one day no food at all...

I'll remember Einstein

Have a good day,
Tanja

Hi Tanja,

One more thing to be sure of also: at least 3 of the meals per week must be so big that the pup will leave food behind.

See also my answer to Ester - there was a little more added to that topic also there.

I trust your brains!

Cheers,

Mogens

Hi Tanja,

I assume everything is OK on this frontier - just don't reply if it is! :-)
