[QUESTION] Variation of food

Berichtdoor Ester » zo 11 nov, 2007 22:28

Hi Mowence ;)

We as teammembers of voernatuurlijk often get the question what the minimum number of types of meat is, that they need to feed to their dog.
We always say that the variation can never be large enough. Despite this advice, some people want a guideline because they can't or just simply don't want to give their dog the best they can give it.
We advice a minimum of 4 different species of animals (like for example: horse/goat/duck/cow). Fish not included.
What do you think, recalling to situations which are not ideal, is the minimum a dog needs when it comes to the types of meat?

Ester.

Hi Ester,

I think you are as right on this as anyone can be. In "Raw Food for Dogs", I say minimum 5 - but I could also have said 4 - or 6.

But it certainly depends on the sources too! If your beef is grain-fed, and the pork is grain-fed, the chickens are industrial standard, the lamb is grain-fed, and the fish is farm-raised, then you have a problem!

There is a well-known study done by David Mech (the world famous top researcher on wild wolves) about the wolves on Isle Royale, between Canada and the USA. Because this island is an isolated ecosystem, it is excellent for this kind of study. And the wolves here are known to eat moose, and moose, and moose, and moose, and moose, and beaver when there is shortage of moose. Nothing else.

And they are in very good shape, health-wise.

I BUGS me when people refuse to use their brains and get to UNDERSTAND THE REASONS, instead of just insisting on other people making their decisions.

Who cares about that number? That is NOT what is relevant here. What is relevant is this: Does this diet indeed cover the dog's needs as well as I can cover those?

A dumb number is NOT the answer to that.... and no numbers can prevent such idiots from screwing up anyway... (OK, that wasn't polite - but it was honest...)

Cheers,

Mogens

Thank, Brigitte - I appreciate it.

As you know, "there has to be something in it for the dog". i think that goes for me too... :-)

Cheers,

Mogens
